San Diego was first found by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 when he sailed into San Diego Bay and first called it San Miguel. The arrival of his ship on the Ballast Point area of Point Loma is re-enacted yearly at the Cabrillo Festival to celebrate the start of San Diego’s rich history. There are still many areas in San Diego you can trip to get a taste of its past – places that would remind you continue to of a great western novel.

One area that is all the rage on the weekends is Old Town. Old Town is the site of San Diego’s first town center. It lies at the base of Presidio Park and today you can find historical spots like the Whaley House, Chic Hotel, and standard shops where shoppers can see store employees reenact how products was made and sold back in the day. It is a nice retreat for families on the weekends where they can listen to music played in the town square and eat good food.

Balboa Park is another good historic spot in San Diego. With the Famous San Diego Zoo and a variety of different museums, theaters, gardens, and pretty architecture, this is another good place for families and holiday makers. Balboa Park was initially set up as a town park in 1868, but in 1915 many outbuildings and fun things that still remain today were added to the park when San Diego was named the host for the Panama Expedition.

More work was done on the park in 1935 when San Diego held the California Pacific World Exposition. In recent years many preservation projects have been done to keep the park in its original state, as it still still is one of the hottest sites in San Diego for festivals and cultural fairs that bring in people from across the world.

There are several more historic sites in San Diego to visit, but these are among the most well-liked. When you are planning your trip to San Diego be certain to do the research and see what kinds of holidays or other activities that'll be going on during your stay. Have some fun in San Diego and be certain to check out these great places!

Diamond has served many forms of jewelry superbly, but the smallest form is the one that catches our interest the most — the diamond ring given in token of love and marriage. The actual proper and recorded rather than purely speculated and know through barely anecdotal means history of this tradition transcends the perception of its creation as marketing hyperbole. The modern solitaire is just the most recent step on a long road from the past.

The Finest Diamond: A diamond that flashed rainbow colors was best: “Even if it has blunt points, if it has a speck, a crack, the diamond that has the reflection of the rainbow procures wealth, grain and sons. The king who carries, so it is said, a beautiful diamond with glittering flashes has a force that triumphs over all other powers and becomes master of all neighboring lands.” Rainbow dispersive color from a diamond octahedron takes overall precedence and the finest colorless diamonds, transparent octahedra with rainbow reflections, are reserved for kings.

Writings: The earliest known reference to diamond is a Sanskrit manuscript, the Arthasastra (“The Lesson of Profit”) by Kautiliya, a minister to Chandragupta of the Mauryan dynasty in northern India. The work is dated from 320-296 before the Common Era (BCE). The “Ratnapariksa” of Buddha Bhatta is a 6th-century text on gems. The manuscript summarizes Indian knowledge about diamond, which it introduces through an origin myth — a window into the culture’s cosmology and values. Buddha Bhatta describes the hierarchy of diamonds, their powers and virtues, and their distribution among the castes.

The significance of the wedding ring was clearly defined in the 7th century by the bishop and chronicler Isidore of Seville (c. 560-636): “It was given by the spouser to the espoused whether for a sign of mutual fidelity or still more to join their hearts to this pledge and that therefore the ring is placed on the fourth finger because a certain vein is said to flow from thence to the heart.”

The powerful Bala exceeded the highest serenity of great souls: in the pride of his courage he replied “Yes” to the gods. firm in his resolve and asking for nothing in the face of the agony that extinguished his life-giving breath, he was tied to a stake by thirteen strings, like an animal; he was bound by his own word.

Knowledge of diamond and the origin of its many connotations starts in India, where it was first mined. The word most generally used for diamond in Sanskrit is translitereated as vajra, “thunderbolt,” and indrayudha, “Indra’s weapon.” Because Indra is the warrior god from Vedic scriptures, the foundation of Hinduism, the thunderbolt symbol indicates much about the Indian conception of diamond.

Rings date back several millennia, but ones given as tokens of love are first noted by the comic Roman poet Plautus in the 2nd century BCE. Wedding rings are known because of interior inscriptions recording the marriage contracts signed in the presence of the Emperor’s image.

Writings: The earliest known reference to diamond is a Sanskrit manuscript, the Arthasastra (“The Lesson of Profit”) by Kautiliya, a minister to Chandragupta of the Mauryan dynasty in northern India.
The portraits that hang in renowned museums like the ones that present Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian I (by Bernard Strigel, ca. 1500) and Mary, his wife, Duchess of Burgundy and daughter of Charles the Bold (ascribed to Niclas Reiser, ca. 1500). The union in 1477 was celebrated by the exchange of a diamond betrothal ring, which would have been an early example and perhaps the first royal one.

Do you have a special interest in the practices of the Amish? Do you want to know more about their unique way of life? Then you will enjoy reading these little known facts! They are sure to help you develop your knowledge and satisfy your curiosity on the culture of the Amish people. Keep an open mind, and embrace their differences!

Most of us have a skewed view of the Amish, due to plenty of misconceptions about their way of life. You may be aware that the Amish are not required to pay any kind of government taxes, for example. Although this is partially true, the Amish pay most kinds of taxes, just not the social security tax. They’re exempt because insurance is against their religion. Accepting social security is something they would never do.

You have probably also heard that the Amish reject many facets of mainstream culture, such as drinking, gambling, and other raucous behaviors. But you haven’t heard that “rumspringa,” or “running around,” is a commonly accepted coming-of-age ritual for young Amish adults. During their “rumspringa,” they are permitted to interact with non-Amish people, and engage in behaviors usually frowned upon. Their “rumspringa” ends after baptism.

Most people known the stereotypical Amish devotion to hard work, but most people do not realize Amish children only finish school through the eighth grade. High school is even less likely for them, and post secondary coursework is completely unheard of. Amish adults believe that extensive education has no place in their way of life, and that it only gets in the way of more important work.

Possibly the most surprising piece of information about the Amish is their history of genetic disorders. They make up a small portion of the general population. Therefore, they are prone to defects. The Amish are reluctant to try any preventative genetic testing, although some are willing to participate in research of diseases which are especially prevalent in the Amish society.

Before you journey to Pennsylvania Amish country, make sure you visit Chris Stanley’s site Amish Cabins PA, where you can read about the best Amish cabin rentals in PA.

It has been estimated that about 80% of the world’s population believe in one religion or another (and there are lots of them), but about 70% of those are adherents to the big four. The four biggest religions are: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Judaism is the precursor of both Islam and Christianity.

The Hebrew Bible recounts the history of the world and the story of the passage of the people from creation, through the flood to the arrival in the Promised Land, or from Mesopotamia to Canaan, led by Abraham.

The descendants of Abraham and his people were enslaved by the Egyptians and did not manage to escape until Moses led them out of captivity. During this journey, Moses was given the Ten Commandments from God and they went on to be the bedrock of Jewish law and custom although there is no doubt that the Jewish way of life has developed from this period in the Tenth Century before Christ.

The sacred writings of the Hebrew Bible or Masorah are separated into twenty-four books. However, the same writings are divided up into thirty-nine books in the Christian Bible’s Old Testament. The Torah or The Law was being composed at this time but it was amended and updated between the Tenth and Fifth Centuries before Christ.

In addition to the Hebrew scriptures, there is a bountiful tradition of ancient oral commentary known as the Talmud, which is a colossal compilation of the Oral Law. The Talmud is the traditional authority for Orthodox Jews.

Judaism is the most ancient monotheistic religion known to the West. Jews believed in one God whilst all of the known world believed in pantheism or many gods like the Ancient Greeks. The name of God in the Jewish language is Yahweh and they believe that Yahweh agreed a covenant with His people to take care of them for ever as long as they were devoted exclusively to him.

In the Jewish faith, sin is the unashamed disrespect of God’s will and that is punishable by God in a similar fashion to the Buddhist belief in karma.. The objective of following God’s Law is being welcomed into His Kingdom.

Jews worship in synagogues in congregations led by Rabbis who are considered Teachers or Masters (as in the old style of calling teachers, ‘masters’) rather than as monks or vicars. The Jewish Sabbath is not the Sunday as in Christianity, but is observed from sunset Friday until sunset Saturday night.

The most significant holidays or holy days in the Jewish calendar are: Rosh Hashanah (New Year); Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement); Hanukah (Festival of Lights) and Pesach (Passover). The Jewish nation does not celebrate Christmas because they believe that the Son of God is still yet to be born. They see Jesus as a prophet in the same way as the Muslims do.

There are three main branches of modern Judaism which are: Orthodox Judaism; Reform Judaism and Conservative Judaism. Some of these branches of Judaism are more prevalent in some countries than others.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on many subjects but is currently involved with Easter. If you would like to read more, please go over to our website entitled Celebrating Easter

Jamaican culture isn’t all reggae and marijuana. In fact there are elements of Jamaican culture that some may find surprising. For example, most people are not aware of the long history of superior craftsmanship in wood. Highly ornate furniture and sculptures have long been a part of Jamaican culture, going as far back as Spanish colonialism. Here, we will address many of the frequently asked questions concerning culture, that appear on some of the most popular Jamaican forums.

What language is spoken in Jamaica?

English is the official language of Jamaica, however Jamaican English is widely used. It is a combination of American English and British English, with a little bit of an Irish accent thrown in. In addition, many locals speak Jamaican Patois which is a creole adaptation of English with West African influences.

Is Voodoo practiced in Jamaica?

In Jamaica Voodoo is called Obeah, and is practiced all over the Caribbean region. However, in Jamaica it is the Christian based religions that are followed the most, accounting for 67% of those who answered the 2001 census. Another ten percent claimed their affiliation as “other” and listed such belief systems as Rastafari, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Baha’i.

Do all Jamaicans use marijuana?

No. The assumption that all Jamaicans use marijuana is a very common misconception and stereotype. In fact, only those practicing Rastafari use cannabis as a spiritual aid and in their study of scripture.

Is reggae the only music played in Jamaica?

Reggae is a big part of Jamaican culture, but there are many other styles of music played in dancehalls. Jamaican folk music developed through the centuries of African slavery, and therefore has a decidedly African beat. During the 1950′s the Mento style of music was developed, and was a cross between Jamaican folk and Trinidadian calypso. As American hits of the same era became more popular on the island nation, new styles of music evolved. Jazz, rhythm and blues, Ska, Dj’s and toasting, Rocksteady and finally reggae came along. Bob Marley made it globally popular, but soon enough reggae began to morph into dancehall, and then reggae fusion. So, the answer is no, reggae is most definitely not the only music played in Jamaica.

Does the Jamaican Bobsleigh team still exist?

Yes, the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team debuted in 1988 at the Calgary Winter Olympic Games. In 1994 the team finished 14th, ahead of the US, Russia, Australia, France and Italy. In 2000 the team won the gold medal at the World Push Championships in Monaco. Although they did not qualify for the 2006 or 2010 Winter Olympics, the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team is poised to qualify for the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

Hopefully the answers to the frequently asked questions listed above have waylaid any stereotypes lingering in the minds of readers. Jamaica may be small in size, but the people and their culture more than make up for it with their enduring spirit.

In part one of this series we discussed the origins of healthcare in Mexico. We learned of the Hospicio Cabanas established in 1792 in Guadalajara, where the poor, sick and orphaned received care. Then, in 1943 the first official system of governmental healthcare provisioning was established. Over the next 50 years the mortality and illness rates among the Mexican people dropped to levels comparable with fully developed countries.

Although the 2009 promise by President Felipe Calderon to establish universal healthcare by 2011 has not yet come to fruition, it is close. According to the New York Times, in 2000 half of all Mexicans were enrolled in public health insurance. By September of 2011 the Mexican government expects to have all 51 million Mexicans enrolled. Mexico’s National Institute for Public Health claims the implementation of universal healthcare comes a perfect time. Apparently only 9% of the population is over 60 years of age, providing a cheap starting point for the costs of healthcare for all. With the “Life Insurance for Babies” program in full swing and infant mortality rates at an all time low, universal healthcare in Mexico will likely look very different in 50 years.

Access may be a different matter, as hospitals are few and far between. Many remote areas of the country are not often accessed by governmental authorities and indeed rebuffed when they do arrive. No doubt those attitudes will change as time goes by, but the fact remains facilities are simply not present in many areas. Those who do find their way to a hospital, away from the support of family, are very well cared for. They receive all the surgery and medication they need – until they are discharged. Then medications cannot be afforded and follow up care is unattainable. Yes, universal healthcare is available but it is not entirely accessible.

There has long been a tradition of Mexican medical personnel going to the US to train, and vice versa. Some California health insurance providers even demand some procedures only be carried out in Mexico because the care is so much cheaper. In this scenario, the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ is not a reality. The actual care in Mexican hospitals is comparable to the US and Canada, just less expensive. There is even a blossoming Medical Tourism industry in Mexico.

Universal healthcare in Mexico is still in its infancy, and there are barriers that need to be struck down. Certain states are unwilling or unable to provide the components of healthcare and there are cultural prejudices that will take time to evolve. But the child of change has been birthed and is growing quickly.

If we had the chance to jump back into the bodies of our forefathers, we would see the world through a pair of much more conservative eyes. Rock and roll had not been invented yet, everyone thought cigarettes were medicine, and it was okay to drink on the job as long as you didn’t kill anyone. No matter how strange you think they thought back then, they certainly think we are much stranger. Just following the evolution of t-shirts from then till now is a clear example of how every generation is just as insane as the one before it, just in different ways.

The t-shirts of our grandparents were just about as boring and dull as the people who wore them. While there are people, such as myself, who wear nothing but t-shirts during the entire span of their young adult years, t-shirts were considered nothing more than a form of undergarment back then. There was actually a time when people were so afraid of nipples, that men has to wear an extra layer of fabric just to make certain that people could believe that nipples were as unreal as unicorns. This goes to prove that our grandparents were absolutely insane.

T-shirts stayed pretty much the same until the 60′s when counter-culture took the reigns. Hippies did all kinds of crazy hippie magic, until the tie-dyed t-shirt was born. Tie-dyed t-shirts were a huge hit, and you can still find them at jam-band concert parking lots today. This is a moment in time when t-shirts started saying something about their owners, even if that something was that they smelled like patchouli oil and body odor. Some movements were not meant to continue, is all I’m saying.

Now we fast-forward to the 80′s when we saw a war being fought over the ownership of t-shirts. Did t-shirts belong to corporate America, or to the growing members of the punk-rock movement? The punk rockers in America used black markers to scrawl homemade declarations of sarcastic war against corporations and the government while those same corporations used t-shirts as free advertisement. I have never seen someone turn down a free t-shirt, even if that free t-shirt has Mountain Dew logos all over it. Needless to say, the victory went where the money is…and punks were never known to be particularly affluent.

Today, people use t-shirts for all manner of purposes. There are t-shirts out there that look like stunning works of art. There are also t-shirts for sale that are so filthy that you expect the tag to say “Made of 100% Feces.” There is no real telling where the next t-shirt trend will come from or how it will change t-shirts in the future. All we can count on is that t-shirts are going to change, just like they’ve changed since the 1950′s when the Fonz was sporting them. When we are old and gray, we’re probably going to hate t-shirts too.

More information is available about t-shirts at t-shirts to learn more.

Congress and the president have designated ten days as federal holidays. Being ‘federal’, these holidays theoretically only pertain to federal employees and residents of the District of Columbia, although they are so widely observed that they can be thought of as national holidays.

Officially, it is up to each individual state to designate public holidays. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before or the Monday after is given in lieu to make a long weekend.

New Year’s Day (January 1) – celebrating the New Year dates back to pre-Christian times, when rites were performed to try to ensure the return of Spring.

Martin Luther King Jnr. Day (third Monday in January) – before he was shot dead in 1968, Martin Luther King Jnr. was the foremost civil rights leader in the 1950′s and 1960′s. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Congress set this day aside to commemorate his life and accomplishments in 1983.

Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February) – initially it was commemorated on Washington’s actual birthday, the 22nd of February, but it was moved in 1971 to make a long weekend. It is occasionally called Presidents’ Day, because it is close to Lincoln’s birthday on the 12th February.

Memorial Day (last Monday in May) – also called Decoration Day, it honours soldiers fallen in battle. It originates from the Civil War and is traditionally marked by parades and services.

Independence Day (4th July) – this, the most significant US holiday, marks the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was first celebrated in 1777 and is marked by fireworks, parades and speeches.

Labor Day (first Monday in September) – this, the idea of Peter J. McGuire, the president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, was adopted in 1894 to celebrate American workers.

Columbus Day (second Monday in October) – Christopher Columbus and his crew landed in the Bahamas on Oct 12th 1492. It was first commemorated in 1792, although it was not formally adopted until 1909. It is a source of special pride to Italian-Americans, who claim the Genoan explorer as their own.

Veterans Day (Nov 11th) – or Armistice Day commemorates the end of the First World War on Nov 11th 1918. It was made a legal holiday in 1938, but its name was changed in 1954 to honour all American veteran soldiers.

Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) – it was first commemorated in Plymouth County, Massachusetts in 1621, the year in which the Pilgrims landed in the New World to give thanks for the new harvest and the new land they had colonized. President Lincoln proclaimed it a holiday in 1863.

Christmas Day (December 25th) – Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

The previous three articles in this series were discussions about the administrative divisions in the United Mexican States, the Federal District of Mexico City and a few specific states. Now we will move on to a few of the most famous states that are frequented by large populations of travelers.

The State of Veracruz

Situated on the east coast of the country, Veracruz has a long shoreline on the Gulf of Mexico. There are many kinds of forests in Veracruz, several differing ecosystems and a rich variety of wildlife. There are 31 protected areas, including coral reefs, and areas where jaguar, spider monkey and anteater are at risk. There is a cultural diversity in Veracruz unlike any other region in the United Mexican States. Prior to Spanish occupation there were four major indigenous groups inhabiting what is now Veracruz. They each had their own identity, culture and traditions which still endure today. The result is a unique gastronomic tradition and amazing historical artifacts.

The State of Yucatan

The Yucatan peninsula is on the south eastern side of the United Mexican States, and the State of Yucatan occupies the northern portion of the peninsula. Since the state lies at the edge of the Caribbean region, there has been great influence from Caribbean nations over the food of the region. The cuisine is unique in its style and flavour, often surprising visitors with its lack of parallel to iconic Mexican dishes. There is a great Mayan impact still felt in the food, as well as Spanish, African and Middle Eastern aspects.

The State of Jalisco

Jalisco is located in the western region of the United Mexican States, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The state has the reputation of being one of the most developed of all 31 states, with a standard of living higher than most places in the country. Many cultural symbols known around the world have their origin in Jalisco. For example, tequila was first ‘discovered’ by the Aztecs in what is now Jalisco, and mariachi music developed there.

In previous articles in this series we examined the elements governance in the states of Mexico. We learned each state is autonomous, has its own constitution and elects its own congress. In addition, the states cannot make alliances with other states or nations (except in the defence of the country’s borders. Each state has its own civil and penal codes, but there are both federal and state judicial entities. Stay with us for part five as we continue to define the states in the United Mexican States.
