San Diego was first found by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 when he sailed into San Diego Bay and first called it San Miguel. The arrival of his ship on the Ballast Point area of Point Loma is re-enacted yearly at the Cabrillo Festival to celebrate the start of San Diego’s rich history.
