Here are my ten free newsletter tips:

1. Give it away for free. Selling it for free will get you more readers than you imagine. Make it free

2. Every niche has it’s fans. Whether you’re into pigeon racing, cross-dressing or want weekly chicken recipes, if it’s your passion it means you’ll want to devour every bit of information on the subject. A free newsletter will supply exactly this.

3. Use freebies. If you can give away a free ebook for every new subscriber (again on their favourite subject) then you’ll encourage people to sign up to receive your free newsletter.

4. Put your own stamp on it. It’s OK to be opinionated. You’re unlikely to upset too many people. Trying to please everyone just doesn’t work. You end up looking like a wimp.

5. Ask your subscribers what they want. Always encourage them to write (or email) and tell you what they would like to see in future editions. It’s a great way to get ideas for future issues.

6. Sell advertising space in your newsletter. Once your readership expands you could run classified ads for your readers to sell their old hobby equipment – whether it’s matchstick carving or hang gliding. Charge them a fee for listing it.

7. Get in touch with product sellers in your area and offer to do free ‘advertorials’ for a cut. If they want to sell their book on how to grow Bonsai trees, advertise it in your newsletter and take a commission

8. Charge for an offline version. Some people want something they can physically hold and read. Work out printing costs and put a markup on top for those customers who would rather have a print copy.

9. Create your own niche product and sell it for free via your newsletter. No advertising costs and ready made audience!

10. Sell your newsletter on and start another. An established newsletter with readership in a niche can bring a three, four or five figure sum.
