Lasik surgery has hugely improved the vision of millions of individuals worldwide. It has turned the visually impaired into sighted individuals who are capable of seeing their children again and contributing to the family’s income by working. Two items that millions considered they would never be able to do again.

However, Lasik eye surgery has not been sitting on its laurels. Far from it, Lasik surgery techniques are being improved all the time. One such enhancement is Wavefront Technology. Wavefront Technology with relation to Lasik eye surgery is used to more accurately map the patient’s eyeball, which makes more accurate surgery feasible.

This is of immense importance because eyeballs are not all the same shape. They are like hands, superficially they all look the same, but once you get down to particulars, they are not. There are all shapes sizes and proportions. The same is true for eyes.

The better the map of the eye, the more chance that the surgeon has of giving you the best vision they can, in relation to the precise problems that you have in your particular case. Wavefront Technology assists the surgeon accomplish this.

Wavefront Technology is really a technology that has been adapted from astronomy. in astronomical telescopes it is imperative that the lenses are as perfect as possible, because at high magnification, even the very slightest impairment would lead to colossal distortions, which in turn would make the telescope practically useless.

Astronomers were using this technology in the 1970′s, so it was already fairly advanced when some bright spark saw that it could be modified for use in eye surgery too. Wavefront Technology was born and taken on board by Lasik and other eye surgeons with immense expectations.

In fact, the bright spark who recognized the potential value of this piece of astronomical technology was a German physician named Josef Bille who began using it in his practice.

He progressively enhanced and adapted the sensors and announced it to the Lasik manufacturers in 1997. This in turn permitted the manufacturers of Lasik apparatus to adapt Wavefront Technology to their own apparatus.

Wavefront Technology is extremely complicated in design and technology but also highly simple to understand. The Wavefront machine sends a flat sheet of light (called a wavefront) through the eye to the retina, which reflects it back to the Wavefront machine.

The Wavefront machine compares the two, measures the imperfections, chooses what has to be done to right them and guides the laser to the correct spot in order to accomplish the corrections. As simple as that!

However, the geniuses who created and developed Wavefront Technology did not give up there. They have their machine send in multiple wavefronts from multiple angles so that the computer can build up a three dimensional picture for even more accuracy.

There are now well over 60 patterns that can be automatically corrected by a Lasik laser guided by Wavefront Technology. So, if you have any issues with long or short sightedness, create an appointment to see your Lasik surgeon as soon as they can.

Insulin diabetic pens can be a much easier way of delivering insulin to a diabetic when compared with injecting using syringes. Although bigger a regular pen, it is far simpler to take with you and the pens are now commonly used across most countries. So exactly what are they, and how do they work?

Insulin diabetic pens include a cartridge for the insulin, a disposable needle and a means of managing the dosage. With the exclusion of pre-filled pens that will must be completely replaced, only the cartridge itself in other pens will need to be changed when empty. Cartridge sizes usually have a capacity of 1.5 or 3.0 ml. The pen is quite robust and positively more socially suitable for the diabetic to use in public areas compared to syringes.

For people with Type 2 diabetes you may be prescribed a disposable insulin pen. These come pre-filled and also the dosage strictly controlled. Perhaps the biggest issue with having a controlled dose, is it won’t be possible to make any adjustments if they are required. For example, if you are unwell, alter your diet or whenever you do any vigorous exercise.

The more advanced diabetic pens (plus more expensive) allow you to store information on your dosage and when it was administered, so you have a long term record which is a benefit. Other benefits include simplicity, convenience, accuracy and they are less painful to use.

You should prepare your injection site in the same way as if you were using a syringe. Select your site normally, which is likely to be different depending on how often a day you inject. A lot of people find the upper arm the most effective, but as this is personal choice it may be the legs, thighs, abdomen or buttocks. Sound judgment should prevail, and you ought to keep away from any tender areas and a couple of inches from recently used sites and any scars. Always ensure the area is swiped using an alcohol pad to clean it.

To use your pen, take off the cover, look at the amount of insulin and clean the end of the pen. If necessary, gently roll the pen in your hand to mix the contents. Place the needle in the end and prime the pen to remove any air pockets. This is achieved by holding the pen upright and lightly depressing the end until just a little insulin appears at the end of the needle.

Check your selected dosage is correct again, pinch and hold the skin and insert the needle fully. Count to five, take away the insulin pen from the site and lightly rub the area. Cover your diabetic pen and handle the needles properly and off you continue your normal daily routine!

You may still enjoy all that you used to enjoy, but now you simply have to do them in controlled portions. I am talking about the diabetes diagnosis you got the other day, and the new diet you have to adopt. You may still enjoy eating, but now you simply have to eat in the right portions.

Never embark on a diabetes diet if you don’t know exactly what you are supposed to be doing. You cannot just buy and indulge in certain foods because you feel they should be right for the condition. You need every decision, every choice, to be guided by professional influence.

There is no food that is poison in itself, but they could be to you depending on your orientation or the condition of your health. As a diabetic, for example, there merely are some stuffs that you just usually do not have to eat plenty of. Stuffs like sugar and carbohydrates are certainly not good for the health in such a problem. Instead, you will need vitamins. Lots and plenty of vitamins.

Whatever you eat when you suffer from diabetes, they must be eaten in moderation. Gone are the days when you get to eat with abandon; this time, you are answerable to your blood sugar level. The next time you eat to glucose excess could easily be your last. You need control the portions of your foods when you have to deal with diabetes. Although most doctors might prefer that you never again touch starchy foods, I suppose you can still indulge albeit minimally. Focus more in the proteins.

The reason a lot of folks are confused about what to eat when they have diabetes is that they either don’t listen to the doctor, or they don’t know what the doctor said. In that case, I suggest you find a balance somewhere in between by doing your own reading and research. I have good reason to believe that if you read it by yourself, you will not forget.

There is no cause for you to hate the food; if something, you’ll need to adore it. The food you must eat now just isn’t what gave you the diabetes; it can be what you utilised to consume that did. I suggest you forget concerning the previous and embrace the future, as well as the eating habits that comes with it. Whatever your new diet as a diabetic is, you must keep a sharp eye out for your blood sugar level. If you don’t have enough information, get tested every time you have eaten something that you suspect to be dangerous. Before a couple of months, you should have it covered.

Final but not the least, often retain a appropriate balance amongst your eating plan and physical exercise as diabetic individual needs appropriate motion of physique but in carrying out that people today frequently give much less interest to their eating plan or vice verse.

Do you realise when you have type 2 diabetes measuring your own blood levels of glucose sugar is a great way to find out how your body responds to the foods you eat and the exercise you do! No book and no medicare provider can tell you how your body is going to respond to your diabetes plan…only by you testing, as often as you can, will show you your own physiology!

Now one of the best things you can do for your diabetes is to get yourself a blood glucose meter. There are different kinds of meters with subtle differences. It doesn't matter which blood glucose meter you buy…buy a straightforward one and use it! Check out the value of the strips as this could be where you will be spending cash in the future.

Are you still there? The thought of pricking yourself might be enough to make you leave!

Some sides of testing are very much the same no matter which meter you purchase. You simply know there will be an ‘ouch ‘ moment when you puncture your skin. And yes it does hurt. After one or two days you will find you stop panicking about this. At the start it is more the expectation that hurts the most.

Hey, there is good news Current technological advances are concentrated on making the finger prick far less agonizing.

Just as blood glucose monitors can be gotten in a spread of shapes and sizes, so are there a range of lancing devices and lancets. And they come in several gauges, a bigger number indicating a thinner tip. This is good to know sincehe sharper and thinner the point of the lancet the less unpleasant it is to prick your skin! But if the lancet is too fine you may find it too tough to get enough blood for your test. And not all lancets are compatible with all lancing devices.

Repeatedly using the same lancet results in greater agony as the blade dulls and hygiene can also become a problem. It is always vital to wash your hands with soap and water before testing.

Dumping your needles:

they should not be placed in your ordinary trash

you could place them in an industrial quality screw-top plastic bottle and then check with your local council, Diabetic Organisation or infirmary how to get rid of them.

your local pharmacy or Diabetic Organisation will have specifically elected sharps containers for diabetic needle disposal.

It is also possible to get blood from sites aside from your fingertips. Some monitors come with attachments to permit this alternate site testing though has found to be less correct.

Discover the sharp edge of sharps containers as an effective way to manage medical waste, such diabetic needle disposal to help 1 the growing epidemic of needles as a community health danger.

You simply received the announcement that your doctor is adding insulin to your diabetes treatment plan. The utilising of insulin to manage your diabetes can cause confusion and intimidating. It does not have to be. Using insulin is a positive experience because it helps you to manage your diabetes.

The first thing to remember is that insulin isn't a punishment in any form. If you are using insulin, it's often because insulin is absent from your body, or your body still makes insulin but it is not enough. Often oral meds are no longer working, so insulin is added to your treatment plan. Your doctor will discuss your dosing wants with you.

Insulin injections are nothing to be afraid of, even for folk that are afraid of needles. Advanced technology has made the needles so little and thin the insulin injection isn't felt. Used properly together with your meal plan and exercise, insulin can offer you fantastic control.

There are several different guides on how to self administer an insulin injection, so this topic won't be covered in this guide. The fundamentals of using insulin are easy, and require understanding of how insulin works which your GP should explain to you. Insulin use also requires understanding of insulin delivery systems, and insulin supplies which will help in making your life with insulin a breeze.

Insulin delivery

Insulin delivery techniques are a matter of need and choice. Insulin users that have insulin pumps as their delivery system have very different guidelines that won't be covered here. The focus of insulin delivery systems for this article will be on syringes, insulin pens, jet injectors and inhaled insulin.

Dose amount and syringe size

Insulin syringes and needles come in numerous sizes. The quantity of your insulin dose decides the dimensions of the syringe that you will need to use. If you're taking 30 units or less, a 3/10 cc (30 unit) syringe will work. If you are taking 31 to 50 units, 1/2 cc syringe (50 unit) will be required. If your dose is 51 units or even more, a 1 cc (100 unit) syringe will be necessary. The needle sizes alter for each syringe size. Syringes might be acquired from a pharmacy.

Insulin syringes are disposable, and will be dropped after one use. A bio dangerous container like a sharps container will be needed to hold discarded syringes. These boxes can be acquired from some waste disposal services, and may bought from any dispensary. Disposal of sharps containers needs special handling. Your doctor, diabetes teacher, or pharmacy should be well placed to tell you where sharps can be discarded in your area.

Insulin Vials

Liquid insulin comes in vials and insulin pens. Vials are stockpiled in the refrigerator until use, and are dropped after the insulin is used up, or after 28 days, whichever comes first. Vials hold various amounts of insulin dependent on the brand. Insulin is drawn up into the syringe from the vial and can be injected into several areas of the body, typically the thigh or abdomen. Most varieties of insulin need a prescription.

Insulin pens

Insulin pens are a handy technique to administer insulin. An insulin pen looks like an oversized ink pen, and uses throwaway needles. There are two differing types of pens. One type is prefilled with 300 units of insulin. The prefilled pen is discarded after the insulin is utilized up or after 28 days, the same as for vials. The other type uses insulin cartridges, and the cartridges are modified using the same schedule that is used for prefilled pens. Insulin pens are not refrigerated after the 1st use.

Needles for the insulin pens come in several sizes. Insulin doses are dialed on the pen in one-half and one unit increments depending on the sort of pen used. The results of dosing by pen is less dosing mess ups. Insulin pens are handy, and permit easy dosing for people on a busy schedule. Pens are also discreet. It isn't recommended that pen needles be used more than once for the same reasons that syringes should not be reused; bacteria and possible infection. Pen needles should be dropped in a sharps container.

Another insulin delivery device which falls into the insulin pen category is named the InnoLet. This device looks like a kitchen timer with a big dial. The InnoLet holds 300 units of insulin and is very handy for folk with visual problems.

Jet Injectors

Jet injectors release a miniscule stream of insulin through the skin by utilizing a mechanism that creates hi-pressure air. The injector does not employ a needle. After the insulin dose is loaded into the injector, the injector is placed against the skin and a button is pressed to release the insulin into the skin. Jet injectors aren't very hot among insulin users due to bruising and other factors.

Inhaled Insulin

Exubera, the sole insulin that is breathed, received approval for use by the FDA in January of 2006. Your doctor will advise you if inhaled insulin is an alternative for you to use to treat your diabetes. Exubera comes packaged as a dry powder in blister packs, and the packs are loaded into an inhaler. The insulin is breathed into the lungs. This method of insulin delivery has some limitations that should be debated with your GP.

Diabetes supplies

After you pick which insulin delivery technique you will be using, a carry case will be needed to carry your insulin, meter and other obligatory items,eg sharps containers. A multitude of diabetes products are on the market to accommodate your needs. Selecting the best products will make the time that you spend on diabetes management more profitable. The most effective way to find diabetes products is to go looking for them online, or look in diabetes magazines.

It's vital for insulin users to carry a meter and glucose pills at every point. Insulin can cause “lows” which can lead to unconsciousness if not treated promptly. Insulin users also have to test more often than non-insulin users.

Now you have the insulin basics, you should be assured you can use insulin proficiently and painlessly as an element of your treatment plan. Debate with your GP which insulin delivery method is the best for you, and start on the way to better diabetes control.

Diabetic meters, sometimes called glucometers, glucosemeter or blood glucose meters, are a necessary tool inside your diabetic equipment that you can’t do without. Most diabetics depend on this portable medical gadget to give them correct readings of their glucose range every day. But, with the amount in the marketplace, it is simpler to pick the wrong one than it is for the right one. So what should you look for in glucometers?

Convenience and comfort

The tracking of your blood glucose range is a frequent routine that may even require draw blood samples from your fingertips every couple of hours. Doctors frequently propose that although convenience ought not to be towards the top of your list of priorities when selecting good diabetic meters it ought to be given lots of consideration. The least blood the meter needs, the least discomfort you should expect. These days, you can get glucometers that do not need to pierce skin to get blood samples. These may include using a light scan across the finger but it has been suggested these may not be as accurate though. A few of these diabetic items are non-invasive and just require tiny samples in comparison with their older counterparts.

Transportability

The rule of thumb when choosing diabetic meters is to look for one which isn’t too small, or too large. Take into account that you need it small enough to take out with you, but with a large enough screen to enable you to read your blood glucose range easily.

Alternative sites for the fingertips

If you have to consistently draw blood, then your fingertips are likely to become quite sore. Many glucometers today allow you to draw blood from less sensitive parts of the body such as the thigh, forearm, palm and upper arm. A few of these glucometers enable the patient to rotate the location that they use which is handy if you have to test every few hours.

Expense

Diabetic meters will not be a one-off purchase so pricing is important. It isn’t the machine itself which affects your budget, but the disposable test strips which often can vary in price considerably. Should you use Three or four a day, this can quickly mount up. Therefore, always work out your real costs in terms of the test strips.

Insurance cover

Glucometers can be covered by insurance providers, but ensure they cover other tools that you need and not simply the glucometer itself. You should also check that your glucometer brand is protected in the list which they cover, so do make sure you check.

Functionality and extras

As with most devices on the market today, you can find diabetic meters with ‘bells and whistles’ on. These extras may include download options and built-in memory, along with other add-ons. Clearly, you will need to pay for these so take into account whether you actually need them prior to buying and then don’t use them.

Many people with diabetes wear insulin pumps that their doctors can monitor and control remotely. It has now emerged that these devices are potentially vulnerable to hackers, who could cause the wrong amount of insulin to be administered. Jerome Radcliffe (aka Jay), a security researcher from Meridian, Idaho revealed experiments performed on his own pump exposed a disturbing security flaw in a device that is critical for his survival.

In recent years, the list of medical devices that use wireless technology to allow doctors and healthcare professionals to control them remotely has been growing. The majority of these devices don’t use advanced processors, and therefore don’t allow complex encryptions that would safeguard against hackers, according to experts.

Radcliffe was able to reprogram his insulin pump so that it could be controlled by a different remote. He used a USB device which is easily available from medical suppliers, as well as on eBay. He was able to see what data was being transmitted to the insulin pump, and was able to control the amount of insulin being administered.

In normal circumstances, hacker would need to be positioned within roughly 200ft of a patient to be able to interfere with their pump – this is an obvious concern in an enclosed space such as a hospital. If they were using an antenna with enough power, however, a hacker could be as much as half a mile away. No evidence exists to suggest that Radcliffe’s discoveries have been put into practice by anyone else, but there attacks targeting pacemakers and defibrillators have been documented in the past. Manufacturers have been quick to make light of the security issues, but experts have warned against such a complacent attitude.

Wearable jammers are currently being developed by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Massachusetts. The researchers claim that this technology would block signals from hackers, but there are questions as to whether the jammers would also prevent doctors from monitoring patients and being involved with their care remotely.

Once you have been diagnosed with diabetes, the first thing you here from your doctor is to “get some exercise”. Pretty soon everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and pointing out to you just how important it is to “get some exercise”. I know, I suffer Type 2 diabetes, but I have learnt how to control the disease, and getting exercise is an important part of that control. At first you think how can I possibly exercise, it was probably this mindset, and lack of exercise, that brought on the disease. You are probably well overweight, a major contributor to the disease, and the feelings of apprehension set in, how can I possibly exercise.

While you may be thinking “that’s easier said than done”, you may be surprised to learn that exercise isn’t necessarily about “no pain – no gain”. Regular physical activity can become an enjoyable part of your day with long term benefits to your diabetes and your overall health. You will even lose weight. It is as important to a diabetic as is giving up smoking. Regular physical activity is certainly worth the effort with the following benefits.

For the person with diabetes

Improves the body’s response to insulin.
Can therefore lower glucose levels.
Lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels.
Reduces the risk of heart disease.
Lose Weight.

Other benefits and positives

Reduces stress and tension.
Increases energy levels
Strengthens bone structure.
Improves mental outlook.
Increases fitness levels.
Improves sleeping habits

It is recommended that you aim to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing some form of moderate intensity physical activity. Moderate intensity physical activity means you will notice your heart rate increase, and you may have a light sweat. If you are not breathing more quickly than usual, it is not helping. If on the other hand you are gasping and unable to talk, you are overdoing it. If you are trying to lose weight, 30 minutes may not be enough, but it is an excellent place to start. Also, read everything you can on the subject of diabetes information and I can suggest http://www.health4diabetes.com is a great resource.

My form of activity was walking and playing tennis and golf. Initially I started on flat walks of 25 – 30 minutes, and then once fit boosted it to about 45 minutes walking more quickly, and “took to the hills”. I am lucky to have both flat and hill sectors in my neighbourhood. I have lost 8 Kg (17.5lb), feel fit and strong, and currently have the diabetes under control. I know I can’t cure the disease, but I can live with it and not have to suffer.
